Costa Rica asks its citizens to leave Cuba “as long as commercial flights are available”

MIAMI, United States. – The Government of Costa Rica urged its nationals this Monday to leave Cuba “as long as commercial flights are available” and recommended “the suspension of non-essential travel” to the Island, given the worsening shortage of fuel, electricity and basic products such as food, water and medicine.

The warning was spread by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship (Chancellery), which attributed the recommendation to the deterioration of supply conditions and the interruptions of the electrical service.

In the same message, the Foreign Ministry warned that the capacity of the Costa Rican State to evacuate citizens in an emergency scenario would be “very limited”, since “the necessary economic or material resources are currently not available” to carry out operations of this type.

For those who are already in Cuba and require consular assistance, the authorities indicated the Consulate General of Costa Rica in Havana as a means of contact.

At the end of January, also the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship of Argentina asked to the country’s citizens to avoid tourist trips to Cuba due to the “deterioration of living conditions” on the Island.

In a statementpublished on the Foreign Ministry website under the title “Argentina recommends not traveling to Cuba,” the authority noted that “those currently residing in that country are suggested to remain attentive to the evolution of the situation.”

More recently, on February 14, it emerged that the airline LATAM Airlines Perú had suspended its flights between Lima and Havana due to the impossibility of refueling its planes in the Cuban capital.

During the last week, the energy crisis in Cuba has caused suspensions or changes in the operations of airlines that operated in the country.

The Russian Embassy in Cuba reported last Wednesday that the airlines Rossiya Airlines – part of the Aeroflot group – and Nordwind Airlines had made “forced adjustments” in the flight program to Cuban airports “due to difficulties with the refueling of aircraft in Cuba.”

In addition, the airlines WestJet Airlines and Air Transat announced the temporary suspension of their flights to the Island, a decision that adds to the immediate stoppage of operations. communicated a week ago by Air Canada.
