The Mayor of Montevideo Carolina Cosse critical the work of the Belgian company Katoen Natie in the port of Montevideo for affecting the cultural heritage of the capital.
Cosse recalled that the montevideana boulevard was declared cultural historical heritage in 1986. This includes the Sarandí breakwater, where the works of the Belgian company are located.
“One of the aspects of this project (the work of Katoen Natie) is that a wall of ten meters is placed in front of the breakwater that covers the view of Cerro de Montevideo“, Cosse said at a press conference recorded by Telemundo (Channel 12)
The mayor added that it is “affecting the patrimony” and that, therefore, “goes against a declaration of cultural heritage”.
In addition to indicating an affectation to the historical and cultural patrimony, a team of 40 technicians from the departmental government sent observations to the Ministry of the Environment, where it indicates the environmental risk involved in the work.
