The mayor of Montevideo, Carolina Cosse, has urged the government to take concrete measures to solve the security problems that affect citizens. In her statements, the mayor stated that security issues are serious and require clear direction from authorities. Likewise, he highlighted the need to provide solutions to people who are affected in their daily lives, such as those who cannot go to a kiosk to buy due to prevailing insecurity.

The mayor of Montevideo reaffirmed the importance of comprehensively addressing citizen security. In this sense, she called on the government to put political disputes aside and focus on solving the real problems of the citizenry. Cosse stressed that security is an issue that concerns everyone and that it requires an approach that goes beyond pinning blame on a particular political party.

The response of the Ministry of the Interior

In response to the note sent by the Administration to the Ministry of the Interior, in which the installation of security cameras was suggested, the ministerial portfolio issued a statement in which it indicated that security is an exclusive competence of the Ministry. In addition, the Municipality was recommended to concentrate on tasks within its competence, such as pruning and lighting.

Carolina Cosse stressed the importance of installing security cameras in strategic places in the city. According to the mayor, it is necessary for the authorities to place the cameras in the points that have been identified as priorities by the Mayor. Cosse argued that her knowledge of her reality allows her to suggest to the Interior Ministry specific places where the cameras would be of great use.

Insecurity in Montevideo has had a significant impact on the daily lives of citizens. The mayor mentioned the “Sacude” cultural complex, where around 2,500 people used to participate in cultural events. However, due to shootings and violence in the neighborhoods, attendance has dwindled to less than 1,500 people. This demonstrates how insecurity negatively affects community participation in cultural and social activities.
