The Superior Council of Private Enterprise (Cosep) supported this Wednesday a proposal from a group of relatives of political prisoners in Nicaragua so that the Government of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo grant an amnesty for the benefit of all opponents who are detained in the context of the crisis that the country has been experiencing since April 2018.

In a statement, COSEP, which is the main employer leadership in Nicaragua, patented its support to the statement issued the day before by relatives of 23 incarceratedincluding that of former opposition presidential candidates Christiana Chamorro Barrios Y Arthur Crossas well as those of a former foreign minister and two former vice foreign ministers.

“The history of Nicaragua has taught us that, within the pain, the generosity of Nicaraguans has always stood out,” said the employers’ leadership, whose president and vice president, Michael Healey Y Alvaro Vargasrespectively, were sentenced last May to thirteen years and nine years in prison for crimes considered “treason.”

“In this sense, we urge all the actors to accept the call for amnesty expressed by the relatives, in order to unite the Nicaraguan family,” advocated Cosep, whose businessman Jose Adam Aguerri Chamorrowho directed it from 2007 to 2020, is also in prison.

“Because of the pain of the relatives, any mechanism that exists (to achieve the release of opponents), as an organization we are going to support it,” said the leader of that organization Gretel Gómez, to the digital portal 100% Noticias.

According to the relatives of the political prisoners, an amnesty would create a general atmosphere of greater calm, would contribute to the economic stability of Nicaragua and the reunion between Nicaraguans.

Relatives of political prisoners have repeatedly denounced that the regime keeps their relatives in inhuman conditions and receiving torture and mistreatment.
