Cortizo vetoes project of the patronages and sanctions Law that reorganizes Unachi

Boards of trustees in Panama will continue to be governed by the current law that created them, since yesterday the president of the republic, Laurentino Cortizo, vetoed Law 550, which planned to establish a new general regulatory framework for institutions governed by boards of trustees, public management councils, commissions, programs and other similar entities created by the State.

‘I reviewed that bill and vetoed it today,’ Cortizo said, after being asked about it.

The veto of this law, which occurred during a community work tour in the district of San Miguelito, comes after civic clubs, civil society and various unions, expressed their rejection of this project, considering that it sponsored politicking in the administration of the hospitals and that attempted against the autonomy of these employers.

Yesterday Cortizo, despite the opposition of students, administrators and professors, sanctioned Law 292 of April 1, 2022, which reorganizes the Autonomous University of Chiriquí by modifying Law 4 of 2006. This new Law allows the current rector , Etelvina Bonagas, who has remained in office since 2013, is re-elected.

This law will also contribute to the university in the development of the plans, projects and initiatives established for the optimal functioning of said institution are not interrupted. It also provides for payment of the seniority premium, and establishes a pension for old age or voluntary resignation.

The sanction of this Law occurs within the framework of the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Unachi.
