Corrientes: evacuated more than a hundred families due to heavy rains

A hundred families were evacuated in towns in the province of Corrientes due to the flooding that occurred due to intense storms and abundant rainfall during the last 48 hours, Civil Defense sources reported Tuesday.

The towns of San Luis del Palmar and Ituzaingó are the most affected, “with evacuees and self-evacuees, exceeding 100 families,” he said. in statements to Télam the head of Civil Defense Operations, Orlando Bertoni.

Those affected were housed in the Sports Center in San Luis del Palmar and in the Multipurpose Room in Ituzaingó and they are assisted by the municipalities and the Ministries of Social Development and Health of the province.

“In some places, electricity supply cuts were made, as a precaution,” said Bertoni, adding that personnel from the Directorate of Electric Power (DPEC) are already working to restore the service.

The provincial official explained that in San Luis del PalmarDue to the abundant rain that fell, “the Riachuelo stream overflowed and the houses of the riverside neighborhoods were flooded.”

He also said that in this distant town 30 kilometers from the provincial capital “there are more than 60 evacuated and self-evacuated families and others who do not want to leave their homes despite being flooded.”

Meanwhile, in Ituzaingó the intense rains “reached 200 millimeters in the last two days and affected low-lying neighborhoods, with significant flooding,” Bertoni specified to Télam.

In this town in the north of the province, it is estimated that there are 40 evacuated families, sources from the provincial Agency pointed out and also added the populations of Santa Lucía and Berón de Astrada, among those affected.

In the analysis of the situation, Bertoni pointed out that the accumulated water caused inconveniences in some viaducts and cuts were arranged preventively in a section of Route 12 and another in a provincial route.

“After the drought and the fires, the floods arrived in some areas,” he said and advanced that, in any case, “more effects of La Niña are expected in Corrientes, more drought in April, May and June.”

Finally, the head of Civil Defense Operations of Corrientes announced that “the outlook is encouraging, because now it is not raining and the forecast announces a 40% chance of rain for the afternoon and no precipitation tomorrow and the following days.”
