HAVANA, Cuba. – With new prices and some aesthetic changes, the emblematic Coppelia ice cream parlor will reopen its doors to the public before the end of January, as confirmed to CubaNet an employee of the entity on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.

The information was provided to the workers last Saturday during a meeting with the president of the Internal Trade Business Group of Havanaan entity to which the Recreation and Tourism Company (Recreatur) belongs, of which Coppelia is a part.

“At the meeting, the president reported that the main authorities of the Party and the Government of the capital gave us a week to paint, change chairs and do everything we can to rehabilitate the facility. The idea is to open with a new Coppelia and, although the exact opening day was not defined, it was said that it would be before the end of January,” said the source.

According to the interviewee, the official also reported on the new price of the scoop of ice cream that after the reopening will cost 25 Cuban pesos, an increase that she justified with the increase in the price of suppliers due to the high cost of raw materials.

“She defended that it was not about raising the price and that’s it, that the idea was not to sell the scoop of ice cream alone, without any other product to accompany it as has been done until now. He said that the intention was to recover the addition of jams to that ball of ice cream, the cookies, the chocolates… and that to do so this week they would begin to make arrangements with the companies that have to do with those products,” said the interviewee.

Likewise, another employee who also spoke with CubaNet On condition of anonymity, he highlighted that another of the topics discussed at the meeting was the uniform, which, he said, will also be renewed. “It may be that each area has a different uniform although, as explained, that was a decision of our director.”

In addition, the interviewees stated that the official of the Domestic Trade Business Group also alluded to the “rumors” that were circulating on the internet regarding the supposed delivery of Coppelia to a MSME, which she said will never happen because it is a flagship institution. of the capital.

“The president said that this was never going to happen, that Coppelia could link up with MSMEs and do any business with them, but that the Government would never hand it over to any non-state economic actor.”

Also known as the “Cathedral of Ice Cream”, located on the central 23rd avenue of Vedado, closed its doors to the public in November 2024. Since then the center has only sold small packages of sweet cookies and four-liter tubs of ice cream with a value of 1,720 pesos.
