The secretary general of Copei ODCARobert García demanded this Monday the urgent appointment of new rectors for the National Electoral Council (CNE), warning that this process must be the result of a great national agreement and not of a partial imposition.
“The country cannot continue to be subject to a questioned electoral power. The fundamental basis of any democratic system is respect for the will expressed by citizens,” he prioritized. “We will only have authentic elections with a reliable referee,” he added.
For the green awning, it is essential that the new CNE directive is a product of legality, consensus and national understanding; This renewed electoral power must lay the foundation for a clear, verifiable and credible electoral schedule. “This is what all Venezuelans want, furthermore, without trust in the electoral system there will be no stability, investments, there will be no reconciliation or future.”
The first step to democracy
In the midst of the Amnesty and Democratic Coexistence Law, the party that is part of the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) reiterated its demand for the freedom of all political prisoners and highlighted the role played by the re-institutionalization of the country on the route to the recovery of democracy.
“Democracy is not a speech, it is a practice that begins by guaranteeing that every vote counts and is respected,” said García. “For this reason, we must move forward now in the appointment of a new CNE that will allow the country to move towards a true democratic path,” he added.
Although Copei recognizes the urgency that Venezuelans have to overcome the economic crisis that is hitting millions of citizens, “no solution will be sustainable without democratic institutions. A new reliable electoral power will be the beginning of our reunion,” he concluded.
