Coparmex: “Extortion has thousands of businessmen in Mexico on their knees”

Coparmex: “Extortion has thousands of businessmen in Mexico on their knees”

The Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic is a voluntary membership employers’ union that brings together businessmen from all sectors.

Sierra pointed out that it is urgent for the Senate to approve the General Law against Extortion, already endorsed by the Chamber of Deputies. ”There will be no security possible without professional, reliable police officers with a true territorial presence,” he said.

The Coparmex representative said that fear will not be normalized nor will we accept the State’s renunciation of its essential function.

”We will continue to demand, point out and accompany solutions that strengthen peace. Mexico deserves to live in peace. And Mexico can live in peace if we all assume our historical responsibility,” he added.

The daily average of extortion cases increased during the first year of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s government: in the first year of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s government, the average was 25.48 complaints; currently it is 31.30.

The accumulated increase was 22.9%, between January-October 2019 and in the same period of 2025, according to figures from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System presented this week at President Claudia Sheinbaum’s press conference.

However, it was reported that as of July 6 – when the National Strategy against Extortion was presented – this crime was reduced by 14% in the average daily number of complaints, between October 2024 and October of this year.
