The Panamanian airline Copa Airlines announced on Friday that, starting on September 26, it will fly from Panama City to the new airport that serves Mexico City, located in the vicinity of the Mexican capital.
Copa flights from the Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA)located about 43 kilometers north of the capital, in the adjoining State of Mexico, will leave three times a week to the Tocumen terminal, on the isthmus, where the firm has its “hub” with connections to more than 75 destinations.
Currently, Copa flies to the capital’s terminal Benito Juarezthe busiest airport in Latin America.
“The Mexican market has been very important for Copa Airlines and for this reason we are pleased to be able to offer alternatives that allow us to continue strengthening our service to its capital,” said Pedro Heilbron, executive president of the airline.
At the end of March, the Mexican president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador inaugurated AIFA more than three years after scrapping a $13 billion private airport that the previous government began building and calling it a symbol of corruption.
However, the new airport only has a handful of flights and lacks connections, so the Government has offered preferential rates to increase frequencies, which currently fluctuate at less than 20 per day.
