COP30 Blue Zone reopens after fire

The organization of the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30) reported that the Blue Zone was reopened this evening, after the fire in the early afternoon of this Thursday (20). The opening took place at 8:40 pm, after a safety assessment by the Fire Department.COP30 Blue Zone reopens after fire

“The Brazilian authorities reestablished operating conditions in the conference space, obtained the operating license from the Fire Department and returned the area to the UNFCCC [órgão da ONU que trata de mudanças climáticas]. The Blue Zone was reestablished and returned to operation at 8:40 pm today” says the note.

The text further informs that the area affected by the fire will be isolated until the conclusion of the conference.

There are no plans for plenary activities on Thursday night. Tomorrow’s plenary sessions (21) will be open to the parties and broadcast online.

Earlier, the Ministry of Health reported that 21 people were treated by the medical service, 19 due to smoke inhalation and two due to anxiety attacks. There is no information on people with serious injuries.

“We continue to closely monitor the condition of all people who required medical attention and remain in coordination with the health services”, says the organization’s note.

“We appreciate everyone’s cooperation, patience and understanding. We have substantial work ahead, and we trust that delegates will return to the negotiations with a spirit of solidarity and determination to ensure a successful outcome for this COP”, the statement ends.
