The cooperative sector is an important economic and social actor in the region, as it not only represents a contribution in terms of employment, production and income, but also adds a strong component of democracy, equality, sustainability and interest in the advancement of communities. , according to Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
Cooperatives and social economy organizations represent exceptional alternatives when it comes to increasing productivity, and with it income, and improving employment levels and their stability, also considering access to social security that enables associated work in this type of company, as well as in other business forms of the social economy.
ECLAC published a study called “Public institutions and policies for cooperative development in Latin America”, which highlights that cooperatives represent different ways of approaching productive development, economic development and sustainable development. “These organizations aspire not only to all of this, but also to democracy, both political and economic, promoting the active participation of workers in the governance of their own companies, distributing the fruits of labor equitably in the companies, taking care of community and the environment where they are inserted, and being especially concerned about social inclusion, gender equality and the contribution to the human development of their workers”, she expresses.

in Alatin america and the caribbean Cooperatives represent an intermediate space between the common good and the private good, between the public good and the private good. They are a community space that is, at the same time, social and productive. In this space, the objectives of productive development are not dissociated from the objectives of social development.
“Cooperatives and other forms of the social and solidarity economy represent not only social organizations, but also companies, in an even truer sense than that of the traditional private company: a company that cares for the well-being of its workers and that understands that there is no contradiction between the progress of people, companies and communities”, said the former executive secretary of ECLAC, Alicia Bárcena.
