Cooperatives attracted 500 thousand new members in the last year

The cooperative system continues to consolidate in the country. According to the Superintendency of Banking, Insurance and AFP (SBS)the savings and credit cooperatives (Coopac) have registered an increase of 500,000 new members compared to the end of last year, reflecting a greater level of confidence in this type of entities.

The SBS highlighted that the sustained growth of members demonstrates the role of the cooperative system in financial inclusion. According to the regulator, debtors exclusive to the cooperative system represent more than 36% of the number of debtors in the financial system, and rural debtors more than 40% of the total. In addition, this system is oriented 66% to female debtors, which promotes the participation of this gender in the financial field.

The superintendent of Banking, Insurance and AFP, Sergio Espinosa, highlighted that the approach to cooperatives has made it possible to improve supervision and adapt regulation to their reality.

“So far this year, the SBS has visited more than 140 cooperatives. An effort that has allowed us to learn first-hand about the needs and experiences of each of them, in order to adjust the regulation and carry out closer supervision, having as a principle the contribution of these entities to the inclusion of more Peruvians in the financial system,” he said during the inauguration, in the city of Tacna, of a workshop aimed at 37 Coopac in the south of the country.

Risk center

For his part, Mario Zambrano, deputy superintendent of cooperatives, reported that more than 1,500 members participated in in-person and virtual training sessions during 2025. These activities addressed topics such as corporate governance, risk management, technological innovation, and asset and liability management, with the aim of strengthening the management of the Coopac.

Likewise, the SBS announced that towards the end of the year, level 2B cooperatives, with assets in the range of between 32,200 UIT and 65,000 UIT (from S/172.3 million to S/347.8 million) and level 3, with assets greater than 65,000 UIT (S/347.8 million) will be able to access the risk center, a tool that will allow them to have more complete information to evaluate credit capacity. of its partners and better manage risk.
