The document that was signed on May 8, during the visit made by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to the island, will be valid for two years. It was signed by the Secretary of Health of Mexico, Jorge Alcocer Varela, and his Cuban counterpart, José Ángel Portal Miranda.

The agreement states that medicines, vaccines and all kinds of medical equipment can be purchased according to the needs of each nation.

Regarding scientific research, he says that Mexico and Cuba will set up a technical-regulatory committee to develop joint actions. The document provides for the implementation of a comprehensive care program for people with diabetes, although the details are not yet specified.

It mentions the obligation of the parties to maintain the confidentiality of the information they exchange in the context of the agreement. This may not be published or transferred without the prior written authorization of the person who provided it, he stresses.

The agreement may be modified by mutual consent through written communications, specifying the date of entry into force of such changes, or may be terminated at any time with written notice addressed 90 days in advance.
