This window to the world shows us adverse and complex situations in many places, struck down by war, hunger, disrespect for fundamental rights, authoritarianism or the denial of democratic principles, but at the same time it also shows us dream scenarios, waste of abundance of a few, life stories that seem fascinating, that no longer require the premiere of a movie or the publication of a novel or story to spread and make viewers fantasize because they are just a short click away .
In this 21st century, migration constitutes one of the greatest global challenges, among other factors because people know in real time what is happening in other parts and look for ways to emigrate to find better conditions and opportunities, even if this makes them victims of traffickers. , risking their lives and resources in the attempt, since the stories of those who succeed are more seductive than the horror caused by those of those who perish trying, and each country seeks ways to stop them, to manage to alleviate the social tensions that they generate and that some poke for their benefit, juggling the needs for cheap labor, local resistance, and the demands of law and morality.
The Dominican Republic has an important and dynamic diaspora, which with its remittances makes an invaluable contribution, which already has different generations in countries like the United States of America and which has been able to insert itself in multiple spaces occupying positions as high as a seat in the House of Representatives, but without ever losing the link with its roots. At the same time, it receives a large immigration from neighboring Haiti, which, although it began with the use of laborers to cut sugar cane, has long flowed at the rate of growth of our economy towards construction, tourism, agriculture and other services, which increased as conditions on the other side of the border deteriorated, which also led to massive exports of our products to Haiti, making it our second largest trading partner, after the United States of America.
The seriousness of the situation in Haiti has exceeded the imaginable, but unfortunately the solutions are still not presented, because this disaster has owners who do not want to accept their responsibility, and beneficiaries who do not have the slightest interest in their arrival, and manipulate an ignorant and poor population, but too rich in pride, playing at presenting ourselves as villains, without objectively evaluating the good and bad of our relationship, since it is always easier to find fault with others than to accept one’s own.
More than ever, it is necessary that we Dominicans keep our heads cool so as not to get carried away by natural passions, becoming aware of everything that is at stake, to exercise sovereignty, caution and justly everything that is necessary and convenient for our country, but with the greatest rigor and respect for the legal framework, always remembering that having the right to something is useless if we lose it by doing it badly.
