Habitat for Humanity Paraguay undertakes its 9th. campaign for adequate sanitation for families in Paraguay. The organization invites donors and allies to improve sanitation in three communities in Luque.
The populations with the most inconvenient access to basic water services are the urban settlements. About the most populated city in the metropolitan area and the one that concentrates the largest number of precarious settlements, Luque, Habitat for Humanity Paraguay conducted a study, in 2020, a sample in 11 settlements.
The study data showed the great precariousness of sanitary services in homes: 25% of families did not have bathrooms with a key and lock; 5 out of 10 bathrooms had no windows, 18% had no electricity. The surveyed families stated in 35% of the cases that they needed to improve their bathrooms as a priority.
The work carried out by Habitat for Humanity Paraguay supports families so that they can prosper through housing. In this way, they collaborate with the reduction of inequalities and promote more inclusive, resilient and safe cities.
The bathroom in each home can be a barrier for families to progress, it can be a source of diseases and generate job instability, school dropout, to name just a few aspects directly related to hygiene, access to drinking water and adequate sanitation.
The previous campaign of Habitat for Humanity and its allies managed to change the reality of 33 families of María Auxiliadora and, thanks to the resources received that exceeded the initial goal, another 20 families of Cayetano were benefited. In addition, it was possible to strengthen the drinking water distribution system with the installation of a water reservoir for the community, develop capacities in healthy housing and hygiene habits, as well as waste management.
