Gianni Infantino has been harshly criticized by many as a result of a controversial ‘selfie’ that was taken during the funeral of Pele. To the Swiss President of the FIFA He has been reproached for something that a priori seems in bad taste but that he has been quick to clarify in the face of the avalanche of reproaches.
Infantino was caught taking a photo in front of Pelé’s open coffin and Thom Gibbs, from the ‘Telegraph’, believes that “what cannot be argued is that it is a great error of judgment to take a smiling photo so close to the corpse of a legendary person. It is a strange and banal behavior of Infantino, and it is not the first time”. For his part, the French journalist and writer Arnaud Bedat described the incident as “disgusting” on Twitter: “FIFA President Gianni Infantino takes out his cell phone and photographs this moment in front of the poor, where Pelé lies. How unworthy, What a shame”.
Infantino did not take long to respond to the accusations, assuring that the reason why he took the ‘selfie’ was because Pelé’s teammates wanted it. “Pele’s teammates asked us all to take a selfie together, but they didn’t know how to do it. So, to be helpful, I took one of their phones and took a photo of all of us. If they criticize me for helping Pele’s teammates , so I accept it,” he writes about the course of events on Instagram.
In addition, he admits to being “dismayed” by the numerous criticisms: “I hope that those who published or said things without knowing or seeking information can have the dignity and courage to admit that they are wrong and correct themselves,” he asked.
