Another container with 500 wooden logs of the species Dalbergia retusa, better known as Cocobolo, and which is in danger of extinction, was seized by the National Police in conjunction with officials from Mi Ambiente and the Public Ministry.
Last Monday a large amount of wood was also seized in a Colon port.
The discovery occurred in a shipment located in a port in the province of Colón, which would be sent to Shanghai, China.
According to Omar Castillo, executive of area A. of the Colon Police Zone, the wood is valued at one million one hundred thousand dollars ($1,100,000) in the international market.
Castillo, assured that this wood did not physically meet the export requirements, so it is presumed that this timber species was illegally extracted from the protected areas of our country, failing to comply with the Crime Against Natural Resources.
This is the second shipment of wood seized in the last 72 hours in the province of Colón, added to the seizure made last Monday, March 28, it was possible to seize 850 Cocobolo tucas valued at one million eight hundred thousand dollars $1,800,000.
