The National Port System, which includes the terminals of Bocas Fruit Co., Colon Container Terminal, SSA Marine MIT, Panama Ports Company (Balboa and Cristóbal) and PSA Panama International Terminal, experienced growth in its activities between January and October 2024, compared to the same period of the previous year (2023).
According to statistical data from the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP), the movement of containers reached the figure of 7,994,636 TEUs, which represents an increase of 15.8%.
Although full containers represent the majority of activity, at 71.6%, empty containers also play a crucial role in the efficiency of port operations, making up 27.5% of the total.
The report indicates that 89.2% of the containers in TEU units handled in specialized ports correspond to transshipment operations, followed by local movement – which includes shipments and disembarkations within the country – with 10.2%.
Port activity shows a notable concentration on the Atlantic coast, where 58.6% of the total containers in TEU units are moved. This distribution is reflected in a volume of 4,684,712 TEUs in the Atlantic, compared to 2,309,924 registered in the Pacific, which is equivalent to 41.4% of the movement.
With the aim of guaranteeing transparency and offering calculation tools, the statistics area of the AMP Planning Office publishes port indicators on the website https://www.amp.gob.pa/, which cover various items. ranging from monitoring the movement of cargo and containers by operation, both domestic and international passenger traffic and the arrival of cruise ships; among other relevant data. This information is essential for the measurement and analysis of the maritime, logistics and port sector.
