Starting this Monday (1st), payment of Metro fares in São Paulo can be made using physical debit and credit cards with contactless technology.
The initiative is part of a new pilot project started at stations on lines 1-Blue and 3-Red and throughout December it will be made available on lines 2-Green and 15-Silver with an initial duration of six months and the possibility of extension. The aim is to assess passenger acceptance and adjustments that can be made.
Acceptability
Mastercard, Visa and Elo cards enabled for contactless payments will be accepted. At this point, virtual cards will not be accepted on smartphones or smartwatches. During the pilot period, payment of a ticket will be allowed using the card used, without considering the integration rules. Anyone who uses the card will only be able to use it again at a Metro turnstile after 30 minutes. This period may be reduced after analyzing the tests.
According to information from the Metro, each station will have an exclusive turnstile for paying with debit and credit cards. These blocks will be marked and the busiest stations will have identified promoters to guide the use of the cards.
“The main benefits of the new feature for passengers are speed of boarding, as payment takes place in seconds; more convenience, as it does not require top-ups and the use of physical cash; integration with digital means, allowing the use of cards registered in electronic wallets, expanding the range of options for passengers and improving flow at stations”, informs Metrô.
