Brazilian consumption in supermarkets accumulates an increase of 2.52% in the first nine months of 2024 compared to the same period last year. The data, released this Thursday (31), are from the Brazilian Supermarket Association (Abras).
In September 2024, consumption increased by 0.95% compared to the same month last year. Compared to August 2024, consumption fell by 1.3%, influenced by the “calendar effect”: August had an extra weekend day and Father’s Day, which increases consumption.
According to Abras, in September, consumption was boosted by transfers from the federal government to the Bolsa Família program (amount of R$14.14 billion for 20.71 million beneficiaries); the refund of Income Tax for Individuals (R$ 1.03 billion for more than 511 thousand taxpayers); and the release of R$2.7 billion in Small Value Requests (RPVs) for retirees and pensioners of the National Social Security Institute (INSS).
According to Abras, in the coming months, the payment of the thirteenth salary of formal workers should boost consumption; the residual batches of Income Tax refunds; monthly installments of the Bolsa Família calendar and bimonthly installments of Auxílio-Gás; and the redemption of the amount of R$228.6 million in salary bonuses related to PIS/Pasep for more than 247 thousand workers who have not yet received the benefit.
