Consultant responds to misinformation about bike path project

The bicycle paths project in the country’s capital is advancing at a good pace. In this sense, it is important to mention relevant points of the initiative.

This is the “AMA Bici” project, which proposes a network of bike lanes for the metropolitan area of ​​Asunción, attending to the different situations that make up the current urban context.

In this sense, through a thread on Twitter, the councilor of Asunción, Pauli Serrano, stated that having a safe bike lane gives us the opportunity to choose. “It is a mobility option and at the same time an incentive”, he explained.

He exposed that The process started in 2019, with the design of the 600 km network to unite 11 cities in the Metropolitan Area (UNDP MADES MOPC). He added that workshops were held with different actors who were proposing ideal layouts and working with the table taking into account the following criteria:

– Maximize paved streets

– Use streets without public transport

– Use streets that link points of interest and nerve centers of the city

– Use streets that have already been identified in other projects (PlanCHA, Caminemos, Muni Proposal).

– Minimize the number of junctions and intersections to reduce the danger to cyclists.

The councilor also stated that There were observations from the Traffic Department, which were taken into account. “This is how this project, which is implemented by UNDP Paraguay and financed by a donation from the Global Environment Facility (GEF),” he added.

Regarding financing, he indicated that of the total donation, the bike lanes have a construction cost of USD 800,000, which come 100% from the GEF donation. “They are not millions of dollars and the municipality does not pay,” she clarified.

“My opinion is that the BiciSenda is in line with being a more sustainable city. If you want to drive, great. If you want to ride a bike, now there is a safer and more comfortable option. Missed more communication, sure. But it’s a great first step,” he said.
