Consulate of Spain in Havana publishes appointment system for Grandchildren Law and the link is removed hours later

Cuba, ayudas

Havana Cuba. — The Consulate of Spain in Havana enabled appointments this Thursday for the appointment system for Cubans who can and wish to take advantage of the Democratic Memory Law, better known as Grandchildren Lawalthough the link with the indications, published on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, of the Spanish government, in the Consular Services section, was removed from the page just two hours later.

The instructions to begin the process of obtaining Spanish nationality remained online for a few hours this morning. However, at the moment, when it comes to accessing the link login, the page displays a “404 Page Not Found error”.

CubaNet was able to get screenshots of the instructions before the page went offline.

According to the indications, the interested party had to send an email complying with specific rules:

  • To obtain a username and password, necessary to schedule an appointment, an email must be sent to [email protected]with the required documents, according to the supposed of the person concerned and a “clear photo” where the person appears showing their identification.
  • The documents must be joined in a single PDF document, the subject of the email must say CITAS LMD and the following information should be written in the body of the email: Name; Surname; second surname; Identity card.
  • For example: José María López Sánchez-Bravo, identity card: 35022700215, you would have to write: JOSE MARIA;LOPEZ;SANCHEZ BRAVO; 35022700215. Without accents, apostrophes or hyphens, however the Consulate specifies that the Ñ is accepted.
  • As it is an automatic system, any error disqualifies the message and if you send several emails before receiving a personalized response, your account could be blocked.
  • If the email is accepted, you will receive a reply containing the username and password to create a single appointment.

With the Democratic Memory Law, the Cuban children of Spanish women who married foreigners during the dictatorship and who, therefore, lost their nationality, will be able to obtain Spanish citizenship. In other words: Cubans whose mothers left Spain in exile and deportation between 1936 and 1975; time when the Franco dictatorship reigned.

In this case, Cubans who wish to claim Spanish nationality under the Grandchildren Law must prove that their mother is Spanish, that she left Spain fleeing Francoism and that, upon marrying a foreigner, she had to renounce her nationality.

Cubans of legal age who could not claim it when the Historical Memory Law was established, a regulation prior to the Democratic Memory Law that offered nationality only to minor children, may also opt for Spanish citizenship.
