Constitutional Court rejects Lasso's statements

President Lasso today made a call to the organization and asked for tools to fight for security after the massacre at the ‘Penitentiary’.

The Constitutional court (CC) issued on the afternoon of this November 13, 2021 a release in which he “rejects statements made by the President of the Republic, who has called for attention “to that body” pretending to evade his own responsibilities.

Around 1:00 p.m. today, the president Guillermo Lasso issued a statement through social networks in which he urged the court «to provide the Government with the appropriate constitutional tools to protect the population and fight the mafias that profit from chaos.

He said this in relation to the massacre that occurred between the night of November 12 and the early morning of November 13 at the Guayas N.-1 Center for the Deprivation of Liberty, known as’Litoral Penitentiary‘. Product of the confrontations between inmates, 68 died and 25 were injured, according to the last balance given by the Prosecutor’s Office at about 1:00 p.m. this Saturday.

In response to the presidential assertions, the Constitutional court He reminded the President that “in the opinions issued since 2019 it is repeatedly warned that the severe crisis affecting the prison system requires concrete and structural actions, different from those that can be adopted in a Exception status«.

And he adds that “(the Court) decided to declare the constitutionality of the states of exception due to prison crisis and serious internal commotion, without their responsibility being the result of the actions planned and executed by the Executive Branch ”.

Both the government of Lenín Moreno and the current government of Guillermo Lasso have chosen the path of the states of exception as attempts to combat both the prison crisis and insecurity in the country, with few results so far. (LAG)
