Any type of extractive activity is prohibited within the buffer zone of the National Park. This stops the exploitation in the ITT.
The Constitutional court (CC) issued a failure which declares articles 3, 4 and 5 of Executive Decree No. 751 unconstitutional.
That decree, issued in 2019 by former President Lenín Moreno, allowed the installation of oil platforms in the buffer zone of the Yasuní National Park.
The objective was to expand the exploitation space within the ITT block, especially in the Ishpingo field, which expects to start oil production in mid-2022.
However, the Court considered that the extractive activity in that buffer zonewhich is the gateway to the intangible or untouchable part of the National Park, would irreparably affect the way of life of the so-called uncontacted peoples.
Pedro Bermeo, a member of the Yasunidos group, celebrated the court decision, and assured that the plans of the Guillermo Lasso government, in relation to the increase in oil production, receive a strong blow.
“Although the cut leaves aside many very important aspects of the case by declaring it unconstitutional only for questions of form and not substance, it is a major victory for all of us who dedicate ourselves to the defense of uncontacted peoples and the Yasuni“, He said.
In this context, it will only be possible to advance in the drilling of 40 wells in platforms A and B of the Ishpingo field, which are outside the buffer zone. This production would begin to generate barrels of crude from the second half of 2022.
However, the intentions of the new manager of Petroecuador, Ítalo Cedeño, to open at least 100 more wells in the medium term in that area that has now been vetoed by the CC for any extractive activity, are left without a floor.
The official had said, during a press conference on January 19, 2022, that oil production should have no limitsand that the whole country should row to get all the Petroleum possible underground.
“We want an aggressive, sustained, demanding increase in oil production. We can’t leave that resource in the ground. Either we produce it now or we will never produce it”, he pointed out. (JS)
