Constituent process: they agree to form an “ad hoc body” that will guarantee constitutional bases

The president of the Senate, Álvaro Elizalde (PS), and the former head of the Chamber of Deputies, Raúl Soto (PPD), confirmed one of the constitutional agreements, in the midst of the dialogues that are taking place in Congress, for a new constituent process.

The helmsman of the Upper House reported that the first agreement between the ruling party and Chile Vamos was reached, related to an institution that will ensure compliance with the constitutional bases or “edges”. Elizalde explained that it is an “ad hoc body” and revealed that at the next meeting, which will take place next week, proposals will be received regarding the composition of this body, as well as the form of its designation or appointment.

The socialist senator stressed that “the issue of the body in charge of complying with these bases was pending and what has been agreed is that it be a body specially created for this purpose, which must ensure that the institutional bases are complied with and it will not be neither the National Congress, nor the Supreme Court nor the Constitutional Court”.

And he added: “I know that there is doubt about who is going to make up this body and how its members are going to be elected or appointed. That is part of the dialogue that is going to take place next week.”

It is worth mentioning that while the ruling party pointed to the Supreme Court being the one to watch over these “edges”, Chile Vamos pointed out that this role should be fulfilled by Congress. Difference of positions that was settled this Friday.

For his part, the former leader of the Lower House valued the progress. “A significant step has been taken to close the chapter of the constitutional bases that have been agreed upon in the bilateral ones and also presented to the plenary session of the conversation table of the political forces with parliamentary representation,” said deputy Soto.
