Consorven calls for sanctions against those who urged a young person with a disability to burn himself live

Consorven asked to be aware of the use of social networks and not to promote challenges that put lives at risk

The Deaf Confederation of Venezuela (Consorven) requested on January 4 that an exhaustive investigation be carried out to clarify the causes that led to the death of María Elaine Herrera, a 23-year-old young woman with disabilities who at the end of December 2024 – on the day of his birthday – he set himself on fire to fulfill a viral challenge on TikTok that some followers imposed on him.

Via statement, Consorven also demanded that sanctions be applied to all those who were involved in this event. He pointed out that, although there are already two people arrested for this incident, there is one who is a fugitive from justice. In that sense, he asked for speed in the case to find his whereabouts.

He asked citizens to respect the provisions of Article 8 of the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which promotes respect for the rights and dignity of people with disabilities, as well as promoting awareness about the capabilities and contributions of them in society.

Likewise, he called for conscience and for human dignity to be respected in networks, just as they asked not to promote viral challenges that could put people’s lives at risk.

Consorven’s text is recorded after the young María Elaine Herrera died on January 2, in a hospital in Maracaibo, after several days of agony due to burns that spread over 70% of her body.

The young woman, who had motor, visual and intellectual disabilities, was prompted to a challenge on TikTok during a live broadcast she did at her grandmother’s house, located in Cañada de Urdaneta in Zulia, to celebrate her 23rd birthday.

There, three acquaintances encouraged her to burn a sweater she was wearing, a proposal to which the young woman agreed, thus causing burns all over her body.

The director of the Scientific, Criminal and Criminal Investigations Corps (Cicpc), Douglas Rico, indicated that Ender Villasmil, 26, and a 16-year-old teenager, are detained for having incited Herrera to make said challenge. He indicated that they are looking for Mary Elena Peña Villasmil, 22 years old; identified as the third person involved in the death of the young woman.
