Congressmen intend to extend the deadline for party affiliations

This Monday, October 7, the deadline for party affiliations facing the regional and municipal elections of the 2026. But once again, bills are emerging from Congress to modify the rules and extend the deadline, as if it were a game. And there is a legislative initiative with a much more advanced proposal that encourages greater electoral transfuguism.

Until this afternoon, the National Election Jury (JNE) continued to receive the registers with membership requests. Unofficially, The Republic learned that from July 13 to the beginning of October, 123,987 new members of regional parties and movements.

This figure is related to the demand for applications for 25 regional governments, 196 provincial municipalities and 1,695 district municipalities (including councilors and councilors).

The deadline of October 7 was established to participate in the primary elections of the regional and municipal elections of 2026. This rule was set by none other than the current Congresswhen they approved the law 32058in May 2024, supposedly to optimize the electoral process.

Projects presented

There are three congressmen who presented initiatives to extend the deadline. The first was Guido Bellidowho in June processed project 8267. This legislator is now active in a party that calls itself Pueblo Consciente.

Bellido proposes extending the deadline extremely until October 2025; That is, just one year before the voting ceremony for the regional and municipal elections.

Similar is the proposal of Luis Piconwho presented project 9078, on October 2nd. This parliamentarian came to Congress for Alianza Para el Progreso and now anchored in the Podemos Peru group.

Paradoxically, in May of this year, Bellido and Picón voted in favor of the law 32058which sets the deadline that they now intend to modify. Legislation taken as a game.

For its part, Alfredo Parionaformerly a member of Peru Libre and now affiliated with the group called Todo con el Pueblo, presented project 9009, where he proposes extending the deadline until January 7, 2025.

Already last August, the National Elections Jury (JNE) warned that a possible extension “would alter an electoral deadline that has already expired.” However, this Congress has already mocked and changed the rules of the game in the middle of the process, in the 2022 elections.

And that’s not all. There is an even worse project number 8761 Jorge Coayla (former Perú Libre), who proposes to declare open the nominations for any political group without renouncing the party of origin.
