Congressmen ask Petro "not to threaten" if they do not approve reforms

Various reactions have aroused the most recent speech of the President Gustavo Petro from the balcony of the Casa de Nariño before those attending the marches in favor of the reforms of his government.

Reaching the end of his speech, the head of state assured that if the reforms that have been proposed – for now only the health one, the pension and labor reforms still to be known – do not go ahead, it would be blocking the “social pact”, as he calls it.

What I must warn is that if for some reason the reforms get stuck, all they are doing is building not the paths of a social pact, not the paths of peace“Petro said on February 14.

“What is being proposed here is a social pact so that the oligarchy gives up its privileges and allows the construction of a democracy,” he added. Along with this, I talk about the little time there is to make changes.

“Perhaps the events of 1938 when they stopped the revolution in progress will be repeated, perhaps in the circles of economic power mechanisms will be woven to avoid a time of change, if that is the case, we only have to remember 1938. Stopping the revolution in progress led to the murder of Jorge Eliecer Gaitán and a violence that still does not end”, he assured.

From Congress there were already reactions to these statements. Senator María Fernanda Cabal He said: “Do not threaten if the reforms that will lead Colombia to misery are not approved.”

“yese are millions of Colombians willing to defend this Homeland, which is tired of populists who, cornered by rejection and disapproval, threaten more violence“added the congresswoman from the Democratic Center.

She was joined by one of her party mates, Paloma Valencia who assured: “We invite President Gustavo Petro to build on what has been built. It is not built with threats, it is not built by refounding; it is built in constant adjustment and it can be built even more on everything that is missing, that nothing destroys.”

also pronounced Radical Change Senator David Luna:”President Gustavo Petro, do not blame Congress if your reforms are not approved, do not play with the people at the point of symbols and narratives. We are here to discuss your proposals. Respect the balance of power and institutions. Did you get used to blocking to achieve goals?”
