Congressman sparks controversy: 'Forcing a child to go to school is a form of violence'

During a debate in Congress, the representative of the Chamber of the Historical Pact, Susana Boreal, ignited the controversy, after ensuring that the Colombian educational system is “sent to pick up” and prepare the children “for labor exploitation”.

He also assured that “Forcing a child to attend school is a form of violence and indoctrination”.

The video with the congresswoman’s statements went viral on social networks, where several people regretted the comment.

The former Minister of Finance, José Manuel Restrepo, was one of those who reacted to Boreal’s comment.

“Do me a favor!!! The solution in our society is that children do not go to school and young people do not go to work. Neither education, nor work… how is society going to live then? Really this is already “Worse than “ideology” this is irrationality. We need to elect a much higher level congress in 2026!!!”Restrepo wrote.

The Representative’s comment to the Chamber occurred in a debate on the project that seeks to establish measures to guarantee children and adolescents the right to education.

For Boreal, the objective of this initiative to stop school dropouts is not something that can be achieved through a law, but rather it has to be treated as a priority of territorial and national governments, through public policies.
