Congressman Edwin Martinez accused of trying to interfere in an eviction

Congresista Edwin Martínez asegura que solo intentó ayudar a vecinos que lo llamaron.

In a confusing incident in Castilla, Arequipa, Congressman Edwin Martínez was involved and is accused of influence peddling during an eviction.

The prosecutor in charge, Dixie Rodríguez Cervantes, received a call from the parliamentarian, who – according to her – tried to interfere in the legal procedure. In this regard, the legislator denied everything.

“I received a call from neighbors, one of them told me that they were being abused because they had not been informed of the eviction. I told them to put me through to that person. They put me on the phone with the attorney general and I introduced myself as a congresswoman of the Republic. She told me that she did not have to talk to anyone. I did not say anything else, and she told me that it was influence peddling,” the parliamentarian told RPP.

Martínez was asked how the residents had access to his telephone number and he stated that his number was public, and that on numerous occasions he has attended to residents who call him for certain matters.

“Are you telling me that you are a congressman and that is why I should stop doing my job? I have nothing to discuss with you,” said the attorney general, who considered that Martínez’s intervention could be classified as influence peddling.

Martínez insisted on denying that this was his purpose in seeking to contact the attorney general.

In the audio broadcast on social media, the attorney general is heard asking him on whose behalf he was calling, and he replied that he was calling as a congressman.
