Congress was characterized by “whitening”

Congress was characterized by "whitening"

The parliamentary year was characterized by the departures of some questioned legislators such as Carlos Portillo, a liberal deputy and Mirta Gusinky, a Colorado senator, on the one hand. While there was “shielding” of other actors such as senators Javier Zacarías Irún, Rodolfo Friedmann and Hugo Javier González, governor of Central on the other.

Another not minor fact was that the Chamber of Deputies began the year practically “saving” Abdo Benítez, President of the Republic. Faced with the wave of criticism for the hundreds of daily deaths that our country recorded due to Covid-19, the legislators decided to hastily treat the impeachment request to send it to the archive.

The rejection of the inclusion of football clubs and tobacco companies in the direct controls of the Seprelad, with the conspicuous complicity of the opposition, was also another of the most momentous points of the year.

Carlos Rejala, national deputy for Hagamos, stressed that although there were things that were done well in Parliament, the bad was much more.

“Among the good things, there was significant legislative support on momentous issues such as rebates and discounts on basic services and taxes. This benefited the sectors most affected by the pandemic, such as the gastronomic and tourist sectors that provide employment to Paraguayans, ”he said.

The legislator also highlighted the subsidies approved for border workers. Like the possibility of auditing binational companies.

“Unfortunately, the bad was what prevailed. We had setbacks due to temporary majorities that did not allow us to advance towards transparency, towards justice. Towards a more solid democracy ”, he lamented.

Rejala alluded to the “whitening” of Hugo Javier González. He pointed out that the Lower House, with a majority of Colorados, not only began to whitewash criminals but also to reject requests for an investigation.

“These issues showed that we have increasingly worse political representation. Personal and sectoral ambitions fix theft, corruption and are above the interests of all Paraguayans, ”he said.

He finally said that this situation must change in 2023, choosing the best men and women.

“When people say that we are the Chamber of Shame, I agree with them. The red majority who manage the theft and looting do not represent the people, they are only there to serve their bosses and their pockets, “he concluded.
