The Congress of the Republic backed down in its attempt to increase the salary of deputies and senators to more than S/ 50,000. This after the prediction of the new Congress Regulation was made public, presented in the Constitution Commission, which included a clause establishing that the next legislators – deputies and senators – would receive a monthly salary equivalent to that of a Supreme Titular Judge. Given this, congressman Arturo Alegría, president of the aforementioned commission, announced that this clause would be “perfected.”
“From the Presidency we will remove from the opinions any provision that speaks about the remuneration of the next bicameral congress. (…) When we were misrepresented as much as we were going to win, it was given as if the prediction was already approved. (…) This was part of a proposal that had to leave as a result of the debate of each of the parliamentary groups of the commission. It will have to be debated by the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.
