Congress grants powers to Osiptel to set ceiling rates for telephone, cable and internet reconnection

Congress grants powers to Osiptel to set ceiling rates for telephone, cable and internet reconnection

With 77 votes in favor, 31 against and 7 abstentions, the plenary session of Congress approved this Thursday the initiative that proposes to grant powers to the Supervisory Body for Private Investment in Telecommunications () so that you can set the maximum rates for reconnection of landline, cable, cell phone and internet services.

The opinion that modifies the Law for the development of the functions and powers of Osiptel was exempted from the second voting process with 78 votes in favor, 32 against and 6 abstentions.

Congressman José Luna Gálvez (NA), in his capacity as president of the Commission for the Defense of Consumers and Regulatory Bodies of Public Services, supported the aforementioned opinion that was prepared based on Bill 893, an initiative of Congresswoman Lady Camones (APP).

He indicated that it seeks to solve a problem that affects thousands of Peruvians who see their family economies affected by excessive charges for reconnecting telephone, cable and Internet services.

It is intended to solve a latent problem whose complaints have reached the Congressional Consumer Protection Commission because it is not known how much they are going to charge for reconnection of cell phones, landlines or cable, which can be S / 2 or S / 60”, he explained.

It noted that the amounts charged do not reflect their real cost. “They charge S/ 30 or S/ 60 to hit a button for reconnection. That does not reflect the real cost and Osiptel has to fix the real costs“, I note.

For his part, Camones highlighted the need for Osiptel to be empowered to set rate caps for reconnection of the service, as well as those derived from the rules of conditions of use.

The measure will allow a significant reduction of the high reconnection costs existing in the different services and correct the high dispersion of reconnection rates among the current telecommunications operators in our country.“, accurate.
