The plenary of Congress The advancement of elections for October 2023 did not get to approve the early hours of this Saturday, amid the protests against the Government and Parliament that keep the country in anguish.
It was a constitutional reform that established a cut in the mandate of the president and parliamentarians to December of this year.
According to the text, the start of the new period would take place on January 1, 2024.
However, only 45 MPs voted in favor, while 65 MPs voted against. There were also two abstentions.
“Since the expected number of votes has not been reached, the constitutional reform project has not been approved,” remarked the president of Congress, José Williams.
A reconsideration request was pending and the session will resume on Monday.
Hours before, Friday morning, The President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte, called on Parliament to set a “date and time” for the new elections.
“That the elections be brought forward to the date and time that Congress says. Immediately, we, from the Executive, will be calling those elections. Nobody has any interest in clinging to power, nobody has that interest. And I, Dina Boluarte, I have no interest in staying in the Presidency. If I am here it is because I assumed my constitutional responsibility and we will be here until the Congress”, he maintained.
