Congress: Board of Directors proposes advancing the legislature to February 15 due to reforms

In full session of Congress, the head of the Legislative Power, José Williams, reported that the Board of Directors presented a RL project to advance the start date of the second ordinary legislature of the Annual Period of Sessions 2022-2023 to February 15, 2023; this in consideration of the wave of chaos that has been occurring in various sectors of the country around the protests against the Government of Dina Boluarte.

As Williams explained in a brief message, what is sought with this initiative is to have time in the Legislative Branch to debate the package of minimal constitutional reforms announced at the end of 2022. Likewise, the head of Parliament asserted that another of the objectives that What they are pursuing in Congress is the ratification in the second instance of the vote made in December 2022 regarding the advancement of general elections.

Why is this decision given by Congress?

After Dina Boluarte took office at the beginning of December 2022, hundreds of citizens from all regions began to raise their voices in protest, calling for the closure of Congress and the resignation of the president.

This situation meant that, despite Boluarte’s initial claims, a parliamentary vote was held in which an early general election was arranged, as the president had previously announced in a presidential address.

However, the decision to date the new elections for April 2024 did not help to calm things down, and, quite to the contrary, the demonstrations against the Government increased and, in turn, the number of deceased citizens, which has had repercussions. on the credibility of the Boluarte administration.
