Congress approves to declare as a person not pleasant to president of Mexico

The Foreign Relations Commission of Congress approved on Monday, with 12 votes in favor and 6 against, a motion to declare person not pleasant to The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum.

The proposal, which will be debated in the Plenary, responds to the statements of the Mexican president, who is accused of interference in the internal affairs of Peru for his position on the vacancy of Pedro Castillo.

The initiative, promoted by congressmen Maricarmen Alva, Patricia Juárez and Ernesto Bustamante, argues that Sheinbaum has shown a “hostile behavior towards Peru” since he assumed the position in October 2024. The proponents criticize that the Mexican president has referred to Pedro Castillo as the “legitimate president of Peru”, ignoring the constitutional succession.

In the session, Congressman Bustamante described the statements of Sheinbaum as “altisonant and offensive” for Peruvian institutionality, while legislator Alva Prieto emphasized that the motion seeks to defend “national dignity” and the sovereignty of the country, without this affecting the relationship with the Mexican people. Congressman José Cueto supported the measure, noting that the words of a president have an “international connotation” that should not be overlooked.

For his part, Congressman Alex Flores argued that Sheinbaum’s statements must be interpreted as “personal opinions” and not as acts of interference, since no official channels were used to make a request. After the vote, the Commission agreed to send the agreement to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs so that the relevant diplomatic efforts are made.
