Congress approved this Wednesday a project that modifies the organic election law to adapt the electoral rules to the election process of the bicameral Parliament in 2026.
This law states that in the next general elections 130 deputies and 60 senators will be elected. However, the lines below stipulate that the National Election Jury (JNE) will appoint one congressional representative for every 160 thousand voters in our country.
In the 2022 regional and municipal elections, the number of voters was 24.7 million. Under the logic proposed by this project there would be 158 deputies and 79 senators. In total, 237 representatives.
The figure may increase because the electoral roll grows as the years go by.
When this rule was discussed in the Constitution Commission, the Fujimori president of this group, Fernando Rospigliosi, said that it would apply for 2031. In fact, in one of the complementary provisions, it is mentioned that this modification will come into force after the 2026 elections.
But that means that this Congress plans to have more representatives with the bicameral system in 2031.
