The Senate approved this Wednesday afternoon a new extension to the State of Exception, in force in the provinces of Biobío and Arauco, in the Biobío Region, and all of La Araucanía. Earlier, the Chamber of Deputies also approved the extension of the measure.
The Senate approved the government’s request with 35 votes in favor, eight against, and three abstentions. The Lower House endorsed it with 77 votes in favor, 26 against and 25 abstentions.
In the debate, some senators asked to apply a similar measure in the northern zone, given the migration and security crisis in that sector. The same thing happened in the Chamber of Deputies.
The Government of the President gabriel boric issued for the first time the State of Exception -which allows the deployment of the Armed Forces- on May 16 of this year, by decree. Then, the Government made a first extension and, later, requested the opinion of the National Congress to specify its extension.
The Executive has sent the request to Congress on 14 occasions, considering the latter.
