Congress approved modifications to the mandate of the heads of the JNE, ONPE and Reniec

The Constitution Commission approved the modification of four articles of the Political Constitution of Peru, among them is the validity and manner of election of the president of the National Election Jury. The modified articles are 179, 180, 182 and 183, they were approved with 20 votes in favor, 3 against and 3 abstentions.

Article 179 stipulated that the election of the head of the JNE was in charge of the members of the Supreme Court of the Judiciary, now establishes that the aforementioned position will be elected from among the members of the five members of the Plenary of the JNE, by a two-year period, without re-election.

Along the same lines, with the modification of article 180, it now establishes that the members of the Plenary of the JNE, “cannot be under forty-five years old nor over seventy. They are elected for a period of four years. They cannot be re-elected. The law establishes the form of alternating renewal every two years.”

Articles 182 and 183 were modified within the framework of the bicameral nature of the Congress of the Republic. It now stipulates that both the head of the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) and the head of the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (RENIEC), will be appointed by the National Board of Justice for a single period of four years, without the possibility of being re-elected.
