The Plenary of Congress approved to debate the motion on the agenda presented by the parliamentarian of the Avanza País caucus, Rosselli Amuruz, in which the President of the Republic, Pedro Castillo, is urged to present his irrevocable resignation from the position he currently holds. . With 60 votes in favor, 40 against and 10 abstentions, the congressmen will discuss whether or not the document is finally approved, presented as a response to the political crisis in the country, aggravated by the latest events in different regions .
This discussion must take place within an hour of its admission to debate, to then go to a vote and decide to present the petition for the resignation of President Castillo. It is necessary to clarify that the motion under debate is only an exhortation to resign, that is, it expresses Parliament’s wish that Pedro Castillo resign from office. This means that the document is not binding and does not force the president to resign. It is a political gesture with no real effect.
During the debate, the crosses between the official groups and the opposition were present. The statements of the congresswoman from Peru Libre, Silvana Robles, who attributed the excesses that occurred during the protests on April 5 in the capital to a “coup gang”, unleashed an angry claim by Patricia Juárez, representative of Fuerza Popular. Robles accused the opposition groups of promoting violence and branding this parliamentary group as “Fujimontesinistas” and “lumpen.”
The president in charge, Enrique Wong, had to put order in the Hemicycle and request the withdrawal of the adjectives from the perulibrista parliamentarian. Meanwhile, the other congressmen were asked to respect the established order and respect among the members of the Plenary, who were also asked to make adequate use of the time allocated to support their position regarding the motion under debate.
For her part, Rosselli Amuruz, author of the proposal discussed, defended her position and rejected the accusations of coup d’état by the ruling party. In this sense, she asked the congressmen of Peru Libre to listen to the voices of the protesters and to understand their demands, in addition to ruling out that behind her initiative there is any particular interest of the Avanza País caucus.
