A clash in the Sararé Indigenous Land, in Pontes e Lacerda, Mato Grosso, which began in the early hours of this Saturday (28), ended with five dead.
During an inspection of the area taken over by illegal mining, the miners’ security guards exchanged fire with police officers from the Federal Highway Police (PRF) who accompanied the Ibama agents. A rifle, a submachine gun, two pistols, a 12-gauge shotgun, more magazines and ammunition were seized at the scene.
The five victims were linked to the miners. No police officers or inspectors were injured. In addition to the weapons seized by the PRF, Ibama destroyed 30 excavators, 22 pickup trucks, two trucks, a loader, six motorcycles, around five thousand liters of fuel, engines and equipment for 25 camps.
Five days ago, a massacre resulted in the death of four people in the same Sararé Indigenous Land, also in an area occupied by clandestine mining. Among the victims, a 33-year-old man and his 20-year-old wife.
One of the regions most affected by illegal mining, TI Sararé has 67 thousand hectares, inhabited by several Nambiquara groups.
