Confrontation between Border Guards and speedboat from Florida leaves four people dead and several injured

The Ministry of the Interior of Cuba reported that on Wednesday morning four people were killed aboard a boat with registration from Florida, United States — folio FL7726SH — that was sailing illegally within Cuban territorial waters, approximately one nautical mile northeast of the El Pino canal, in Falcones Cay, Corralillo municipality, Villa Clara province.

An information note distributed by the Minint states that, when a surface unit of the Border Guard Troops with five combatants on board approached to identify the vessel, fire was opened from the boat on the Cuban troops and the commander of the border guard vessel was injured.

“As a result of the confrontation, until the closing of this information, on the foreign side, four attackers were killed and six injured, who were evacuated and received medical assistance,” the note states.

The Ministry of the Interior reaffirmed in its statement “the will to protect territorial waters, based on the fact that national defense is a fundamental pillar for the Cuban State in favor of the protection of its sovereignty and stability in the region.”

Finally, it was reported that the competent authorities continue the investigations to fully clarify the facts.

So far, the identity of those involved in this action has not been released.
