The Association of Secondary School Teachers (GOODBYE) has decided to extend its 24-hour strike until next Friday, inclusive, in response to recent events at the Alfredo Vásquez Acevedo Institute.
The measure, which will be applied only in the country’s capital, was announced after a march by the organization to the Central Board of Education (encode).
In statements to the press, the leader of ADES, Andrea Revuelta, said that the organization considers that the sanction imposed on the director of the institute, Leonardo Ruidíaz, is unfair and that they will seek the revocation of said resolution.
Said sanction was made based on a regulation signed decades ago by former President Juan María Bordaberry.
The IAVA High School in conflict and indeterminate strike
Revuelta argued that the events that occurred at the IAVA are the consequence of a series of events that have been taking place since last year, and that show an authoritarian attitude on the part of the educational authorities, who have not shown interest in dialoguing with the students. and the teachers.
Ruidíaz has been suspended from his duties and his assets are withheld, which has generated discomfort among ADES members.
For Revuelta, this situation demonstrates the contradiction of the educational authorities, who defend the autonomy of educational centers, but prevent directors from establishing dialogue with their students and teachers.
This Friday, ADES will hold an assembly in which the next steps to follow within the framework of the strike will be discussed.
Meanwhile, the organization maintains its critical stance towards the education authorities and its commitment to defend the rights of education workers.
