The Hospital de Clínicas summons children with a diagnosis of cleft lip and palate for reconstructive surgeries.
Prof. Dr. Celso Aldana, Head of the FCMUNA Plastic Surgery Unit, explained that with the help of the Smiletrain Foundation, they continue to work for the treatment of patients diagnosed with cleft lip and palate (FLAP), mentioning that they are born with an anatomical characteristic, which require correction, since having a fissure this compromises speech, in addition to generating problems in swallowing, breathing or feeding.
“Through a multidisciplinary team, the anatomy and function of these patients are restored, every day in the office our patients are monitored by Pediatrics, dentistry, nutrition, anesthesiology, psychology, etc. A whole team to prepare you for the duration of the treatment, before, during and after surgery, since the surgical intervention is part of the process”, he narrowed down.
The conference also presented the renovation of equipment in the surgical room for surgeries on patients diagnosed with cleft lip and palate, such as high-performance anesthesia machines, a modern ceiling sciatica, an insufflation machine for thermal bands to keep patients warm, injection syringe pumps, spiral tubes, a new electro scalpel, being an important investment to equip the operating room, through the cooperation offered by the Smile Train Foundation to the FCM-UNA, who also offer continuous education and training to the entire staff of professionals who are part of the multidisciplinary team.
During said presentation of equipment, authorities of the institution were present, such as the Vice Dean Mg. Prof. Dr. Fabrizzio Frutos Porro, Prof. Dr. Walter Delgado, Head of the Anesthesiology Department, Dr. Ana Collante, Head of the Central Surgical Pavilion, as well as Prof. Dr. Celso Aldana, Head of the Surgery Unit Plástica, Dr. Jesús Amarilla, specialist surgeon, and residents of the unit, among others.

A growth opportunity
Although these surgeries help a significant number of patients, these procedures are also part of the training and specialization of medical professionals, where they manage each clinical case, seeing different techniques through a team of specialists, according to Dr. Jesús Amarilla, surgeon of the Unit.
In turn, the Vice Dean of the FCM-UNA, thanked the Smile Train Foundation for all that was provided, as well as highlighted the self-management carried out by the different departments of the teaching hospital, thus promoting the effort to train excellent professionals, providing quality care to patients who come to Clinics.
