Carlos Hurtado, Epidemiology manager of the Departmental Health Service, confirmed the first death from influenza in the department of Santa Cruz. At the momentthere are 11 patients in intensive care, four of them are minors.

The patient who lost his life he was 30 years old, had an underlying disease and did not had the dose of immunization against influenza. “This has to call us to reflect on vaccination,” Hurtado remarked.

He reported that there are currently 31 patients hospitalized for influenza, of which 21 do not have the vaccine. Another 11 are in intensive care and eight do not have the immunization dose against influenza. Of the 11 patients who are in therapy, four are minors.

According to Hurtado’s version, for a couple of weeks the cases of influenza have accelerated in the department of Santa Cruz, mainly due to the circulation of the AH1N1 strain, which is one of the contagious and lethal.

“That is why it is important that people go to health centers for the vaccine”, the manager reiterated, detailing that until last week it was known that only 4,000 people were dosed; when so far this week the immunization of 7,000 has already been reached.

Hurtado recommended not only vaccination but also the application of the Filters for both minors and seniors.

The first filter is in the house, in case of presenting any symptoms, it is preferable that you do not go to work or school. Another filter is in the entrance to the source of employment or the educational center, in case of suspicion, it is best to refer the patient to a health center.

Nationwide, 2 people have already died from influenza so far this year and 4 from other respiratory viruses.
