The Brazilian state oil company Petrobras confirmed this Friday the discovery of a reserve of natural gas in deep waters off the north coast of Colombia, with an exploitation potential that has yet to be evaluated.
The “accumulation of natural gas“was found in the Uchuva-1 exploitation well, drilled by the Brazilian company 32 kilometers from the coast and 76 kilometers from Santa Marta, the capital of the department of Magdalena, as reported by Petrobras.
The natural gas was found in a layer of 830 meters and is part of the Tayrona Block, exploited by a consortium made up of Petrobras (44.44%) and the Colombian state company Ecopetrol (55.56%).
“The discovery is the result of the actions of the consortium” to measure the data collected through “new technological solutions for geology and geophysics, added to the experience in deep water operations,” the state company said.
Participation in the Tayrona Block is part of the “active management” of the company’s portfolio and “the opening of this new frontier is aligned with the strategic plan of maximizing our value with the exploitation of assets in deep and ultra-deep waters,” he added. .
The finding “increases the prospects for the development of a new exploitation and production frontier in Colombia” and the consortium “will continue the activities in the Tayrona Block, with the aim of evaluating the dimensions of the new gas accumulation found,” he stressed. the company.
The news was released a day after Petrobras announce that in the first half of this year it obtained a net profit of 98.891 million reais (about 19.164 million dollars), the highest for the period in its history, thanks to the sharp rise in crude oil prices in world markets.
