In just 18 days between the fourth and fifth visits allowed by the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo to the political prisoners in the cells of “the new Chipote”, their relatives confirmed that the continuous deterioration of their physical and emotional conditions persists, according to details disclosed in a joint statement.
This is the first time that the regime allows a new visit in less than three weeks, although it is only the fifth that it allows them in almost eight months of confinement, and they are carried out under harassment and police surveillance. This fifth round of visits was carried out between January 21 and 23, and for many it was shorter than the previous ones.
The relatives of the political prisoners denounced the prolonged isolation, the physical and psychological torture and the continuous deterioration of the health of their unjustly imprisoned relatives.
“Physical and psychological deterioration continues due to unbalanced nutrition, lack of regular access to sunlight and, above all, isolation and lack of communication,” they indicated.
They also pointed out that medications are being provided to them without having an appropriate specialized medical evaluation; External medical evaluations and follow-up or specialists are not allowed, not even in cases of pre-existing conditions; and that their relatives have developed other conditions that put their lives at permanent risk.
Health of political prisoners continues to deteriorate
They reiterated that the health condition of Roger Reyes, who has presented depression, anxiety and memory loss, “continues to be serious and has not yet received specialized care from a psychiatrist” despite having requested it on multiple occasions.
Likewise, they highlighted that the health of the elderly “is in a critical situation”, mentioning cases of alarm such as that of José Pallais, who indicate that he has lost almost 90 pounds of weight and his state of physical weakness that has led him to fainting; and that of Mauricio Díaz who has fainted twice, has spots on his skin and mental blackouts.
They also mentioned the case of Edgar Parrales, who lacks a large intestine, “has dizziness, has a hernia and has lost 16 pounds in 63 days”; and that of Juan Lorenzo Holmann, who “has a spot in one eye, an inflammation in the groin, prostate problems and has also suffered from fainting.”
Relatives of Violeta Granera denounced, through a letter published on her social networks, that her health continues to deteriorate, as she does not recover her weight, her dental problems have worsened, she continues to be subjected to daily interrogations, her ability to feed herself has worsened, He has sugar problems due to his poor diet and shows a “very alarming” emotional state.
“Comparing her condition since the last visit, the change in her state of mind has deteriorated rapidly, due to the psychological torture and humiliating treatment to which she has been subjected,” they denounced.
They demand respect for the human rights of political prisoners
They denounced that prisoners of conscience remain completely defenseless, since the authorities continue to fail to respect due process, proceedings are de facto suspended, they are not allowed to meet with their defense attorneys, and interrogations continue in the absence of their lawyers.
“All petitions filed by his lawyers are denied or unresolved. Their causes continue without appearing reflected in the Judicial Power system with the aim of making them invisible and maintaining their defenselessness”, they indicate.
They also pointed out that in cases such as that of the political prisoners Víctor Hugo Tinoco, Irving Larios and Dora María Téllez, political reprisals have even led to the deprivation of the right to their social security pensions, with which their relatives assume daily family expenses.
The relatives reiterated that their daily struggle and fundamental collective demand, both to the State of Nicaragua, to the Judiciary, and to the Directorate of Judicial Assistance of the National Police, “is immediate, unconditional freedom and with guarantees for all our relatives, as well as as for all political prisoners.”
They demanded that, while the unjust and arbitrary imprisonment lasts, at least their human rights and due process be respected, physical and psychological torture cease, periodic visits be authorized, and prolonged isolation, such as Tamara is subjected to, be ended.
