At a recent shareholders meeting, the general meeting of Petroperu would have appointed Alejandro Narváez Liceras as president of the board of directors of the state company, under the category of independent director; However, this designation continues to generate criticism, such as that of Alfonso Bustamante, president of the National Confederation of Private Business Institutions (Confiep).
The business representative expressed his surprise regarding the election of Alejandro Narváez, whose profile responds to a “marked political orientation towards the left” and not that of a technician, as was sought.
In addition, he questioned the new president’s vision of Petroperú’s problems, stating that this company faces a serious infrastructure and, above all, administration crisis, more than just liquidity problems, as Narváez pointed out.
“He says that Petroperú has a liquidity problem, when really what we know is that it has become a white elephant,” added Alfonso Bustamante.
The head of Confiep also emphasized the high cost that the company has represented for the country, alluding to what he considers “bad financing” that would be draining public resources from the State for up to “7 billion dollars,” he told RPP.
Bustamante suggested that, instead of continuing to inject money into the state company, refinancing with creditors should be prioritized and focus on improving its operational efficiency.
He also mentioned that the Government recently issued a supreme decree that would allow a temporary injection of funds, pending the establishment of a Project Management Office (PMO) to lead the company’s recovery process.
Finally, Bustamante also referred to the resignation of two directors of the state company, describing the situation as “a new crisis” for Petroperú. In addition, he questioned Narváez’s background, stating that he is “a politician and not a technician” with “severe personal and professional questions.”
