Confiep asks the Prosecutor José Domingo Pérez to withdraw the accusation against Ricardo Briceño

The National Confederation of Private Business Institutions (Confiep) today backed the request of the former president of its association, Ricardo Briceño, for prosecutor José Domingo Pérez to withdraw the accusation against him, “due to lack of evidence,” in the Cocteles case.

“From Confiep, we support Mr. Briceño’s request that prosecutor José Domingo Pérez withdraw his accusation due to lack of support, remembering that the Public Prosecutor’s Office is not only the holder of the criminal action, but, above all, the defender of legality and fundamental rights,” the statement said.

Confiep statement.

The document from the business association states that during the three days of hearing against Briceño, on September 17, 19 and 23, “Briceño asked the Judiciary to provide his statement voluntarily and publicly in order to contribute to the clarification of the facts, as it has been doing since this process began in 2018.”

“Briceño has always acted in strict compliance with the legal framework and our statute, aligned with the principles of defending the social market economy and promoting the importance of private enterprise for national development,” says another excerpt from the statement.

“Over the course of these six years,” the statement added, “while the Prosecutor’s Office has not been able to demonstrate any evidence or proof to support the accusations of money laundering or fraud, Mr. Briceño has presented solid evidence to exclude him from the process as he is innocent.”

According to Confiep, “the Private Investment Promotion Campaign 2 was completely legal, all contributions and donations were banked, recorded in accounting books, used for statutory purposes and approved by the various governing bodies of Confiep. We categorically reiterate that Mr. Briceño never had access to the funds of said campaign, he did not design or manage it.”

“It is regrettable that Mr. Briceño has to wait all the years that the process lasts for the Judiciary to declare his innocence, when he has always been innocent,” concludes the Confiep statement.
